How I made life a little easier for myself and ideas that might work for you too

I found the transition into adulthood quite difficult. Partially from a lack of decent role models, probably from a lack of purpose, and definitely because of my sensitive nature and, at times, bad mental health. I look back on these times with good humour, though — I mean, I used to sit on my kitchen floor and drink milk from the carton crying in the middle of the night sometimes.

I had unsteady and unsatisfying work. I had no savings. I was always depressed. I seemed to attract useless partners. I had no goals. I worried about my kid and felt that my parenting was very haphazard.

To embrace the responsibilities of adulthood and parenting, I needed to face up to some of the realities of life and instead fight against them to change. The more you resist life being unfair, the more proactive you are in your response… I find. I saved myself a lot of heartache and time by using these in my everyday existence.

  1. You are not obligated to be fun, interesting, or happy at any given time if you don't feel it. You do not owe anyone anything. Being positive doesn't fix everything — it ignores stuff. Sometimes you have to be super low to build yourself back up. So be around people who are OK with this or on your own.
