Historically speaking, women have had a relatively raw deal regarding everything from status to birth control. Looking at how women lived their lives during this period enables us to situate the role of women in both American and British societies.
Women's sexuality and their ties to the domestic and motherhood sphere. Looking at some of the histories of the shifts of women in these societies, the role of women regarding motherhood and birth can be assessed in contemporary life.
The changing dynamics of relations between men and women, such as the use of birth control being publicized and advocated from the 1920s, also indicate a development in the control of the female body and a newer approach to family size. Women' earning' the right to vote and work outside of the home were mostly unheard of during this period, as most of these changes did not come to fruition until the last century.
LIFESTYLE AND WORK
Victorian women of all classes seemed to have had quite a restricted lifestyle — they were not allowed to own property and could not vote. Their main aims in life, particularly that of the middle and upper classes, seemed to have concerned perhaps gaining a higher social status, finding a suitable husband, and relying on his income to support themselves and…
